Abstract The competitive consequences of different types of innovation have been one of the central themes in research on technological innovation (e.g. Mansfield 1968; Abernathy and Utterback 1978; Tushman and Anderson 1986; Henderson and Clark 1990). Studies have repeatedly shown that incumbents ability to create and to adapt to nonincremental innovation differs starkly from their ability to deal with incremental innovation (Henderson and Clark 1990; Christensen and Bower 1996). Several types of innovations have been identified that create particular challenges for incumbents.
