This study examines how experience within the field of journalism affects perceptions of journalistic norms and success. Utilizing in-depth interviews with 53 digital journalists working in both legacy and digitally native newsrooms, the results show that veteran journalists (10+ years) and less-experienced colleagues (5 years or less), have differing views on both traditional professional norms and definitions of success. The results are interpreted through the lens of Robert Merton’s theory of cumulative advantage.
