Abstract This research describes and analyzes the local history, use, meaning, and impact of the term “Rutter,” a colloquial term used in southeastern Ohio. The use of “Rutter” is closely associated with other negative Appalachian stereotypes. “Rutter” is a local surname that seems to have undergone a process of pejoration. We present findings from semi-structured interviews (n = 10) with adult residents, with particular attention to the impact this term has on those who are called “Rutter” and effectively “othered” by the term in their local communities. We explore the thematic findings that emerged from the study and implications for action.
