Based on a survey of property owners (N=1000; response rate=72.1%) in Vilas County, Wisconsin, USA, this chapter examines second-home ownership within a sense of place framework. The chapter focuses on two dominant place meanings ('home' and 'escape') in a second-home intensive landscape, and discusses how these meanings are created for primary and secondary homeowners and how they are linked to place attachment. The findings do not support the notion of dwelling hierarchy as conventionally considered: second homes hardly appear to be 'second'. Second homes are simultaneously 'home' and 'escape' places for the people who have them, yet apparently it is the feeling of 'escape" that drive attachment.
