This chapter addresses the research-politics gap and frames it as distinct from other phenomena such as the research-policy gap. The research-politics gap is a key issue because politicians are the ones who set the policy agenda. The existing literature on knowledge and research utilization is used to discuss the absence of education research in policymaking. Based on this review, I argue that the research enterprise itself does not need to change fundamentally to be useful in policymaking. Rather, academics must better understand their role and how to function in a political environment. The chapter closes with specific strategies for academics to leverage their strengths and engage with politicians in an effort to shape the policy agenda.
