The article presents evidence of private musical practices in the region of Cuyo, Argentina, from the eighteenth century to the beginning of the nineteenth. The work is based mainly on colonial archives from the cities of Mendoza and San Juan, which belonged to the General Captaincy of Chile until 1776. It is possible to explain and interpret such evidence because of the relationship of three geopolitical factors: the geography, economy, and border characteristics of the region. The article presents evidence of instruments in particular residences, payments to players of music at funerals, music in popular social spaces, and commercial activity around music, demonstrating an interesting activity in an environment not yet studied for the musicology of Chile and Argentina.
