The Adult Attachment Interview should not be used with clinical or patient populations, or with populations who are at risk (for example, maltreating parents) except and unless it is used by the subject’s own doctor, clinician, social worker, or counselor. In other words, this interview should not be used as an “intake” interview where the subject tells his life story to one person and then moves to another for counseling. Where this interview is used with vulnerable populations, the interviewer and the helping professional should be identical. In all cases, some time should be devoted to de-briefing following the interview. The researcher will want to reassure the subject about various issues, including the fact that the confidentiality of the interview will be respected; ask how she felt about the interview; whether she now has anything to add; and whether she now has her own questions. Finally, the interviewer should let the subject know that the interviewer will be available in the future, should any questions relating to the interview arise.
