“This chapter addresses the current status as well as challenges and opportunities for the documentation, preservation, access, and interpretation of the archive of contemporary performance. It presents theoretical questions and responses as well as evidence of relevant and recent case studies of large-scale multimedia digitisation projects of theatre archives, such as the digital theatre archive collections at NUI Galway. In drawing on current scholarship, I offer new contributions and considerations to archival literacy and ethics, as well as on the transformative elements of digital records to the sensory perception and reception of the liveness of performance. The unstable medium of the viral video, instantly consumable and sharable within its format, is ultimately subject to the chance of deletion or alteration at the whim of internet users, counter to the premise of stability within the archive—a “final” version contained within its medium.” These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
