Understanding the nature of the workforce has become more complex with increasing diversity of age, culture and gender within the workplace. Attitudes toward one’s career and desired manager can shape how individuals react to workplace situations, challenges and opportunities. We use data from the United States and China to examine career perceptions and attitudes toward managers grouped by generation, culture and gender. We found that culture affects generational change; generational differences are greater in the United States than in China. Work values differ across generations and cultures; for example, American expect more from their managers and have a stronger workplace self-perceptions than Chinese across generations. We also found that traditional gender roles persist more strongly across generations in China than in the United States.
