This chapter begins by looking at government workforces by age groups. It then examines the various strategies that have been or could be relied upon for effectively managing age diversity in public sector employment. Age discrimination continues to exist in both the public and private sector workforces. Work environments have undergone significant changes in recent years, thereby requiring the constant adaptation of employees to tools and technologies, and vice versa. In effect, the demand for training arid developing government employees has increased substantially. To the extent that older public employees are plateauing in their jobs, managers will need to develop ways to motivate older workers. As government employers develop diversity programs to better manage workforces of the twenty-first century, age is an important characteristic that should not be overlooked. As the workplace continues to become increasingly intergenerational, strategies to harness the resources of individuals at all ages can help build a stable, harmonious, and ultimately productive workforce.
