This chapter examines the “Batalla de Carnal y Cuaresma” in the Libro del Arçipreste , as an example of carnival litteralisé , or a clerical textualization of popular carnival plays which flourished in medieval Europe as part of popular feasts preceding Lent. The “Batalla” in the Libro is a heteroglossic text composed of residual traces of ritual calendar rites of fertility mythology combined with the parodic subversion of several liturgical as well as literary genres. The “Batalla de Carnal y Cuaresma,” which is the longest single episode in the Libro , can be divided into three parts: the preparations for the battle between the two antagonists and the battle proper, ending in the temporary defeat and imprisonment of Flesh; his vengeance and the defeat of Lent; and the final triumphal reception of the victorious Flesh by his grateful subjects.
