Using the assumptions of Lazarus theory of stress appraisal and coping we unveil relationship of exploitative leadership on employee outcomes (turnover intentions, creativity and performance). We hypothesized that exploitative leadership poses a threat to employees and employees respond to this stressor by adopting tit for tat strategy by increasing their turnover intentions and withholding their creativity and job performance through underlying mechanism of knowledge hiding. Further we hypothesize that the exploitative leadership and knowledge hiding relationship is weaker for individuals having high fear of negative evaluation (FNE). Employing a multi-wave and two source sample collected from employees and their fellow peers (n=281) in the service sector of Pakistan we tested our proposed framework using the moderated mediation technique. The findings demonstrate that employees having high fear of negative evaluation under the exploitative leadership do not indulge in knowledge hiding behaviour thus are likely to reflect increase in creativity, job performance and lowered turnover intentions. Our study opens up a new avenue in the knowledge hiding domain whereby proposing and testing interplay of fear of negative evaluation and exploitative leadership as instrumental in decreasing knowledge hiding behaviour and resulting in favourable outcomes.
