This report was commissioned by the Institute of Personnel and Development (IPD) in the United Kingdom (UK). It has been undertaken by the Evaluation Development and Review Unit (EDRU) of The Tavistock Institute to support the IPD in its policy development and dissemination activities. The report is based on a major review of English langugage research evidence of differences in approaches to workplace learning, learning culture and performance and sets the development of workplace learning in the context of changing market conditions. Although much of the evidence is UK-based, the review has examined evidence from within Europe, the Pacific Rim countries and, to a small extent, countries of the Americas. The chapters are: The nature of workplace learning; Workplace learning for a new economy; Company strategies and sectoral differences; Approaches to learning at work; Learning models, processes and practices; Workplace learning and performance improvement; National context and culture.
