Middle adulthood, the period between ages 40 and 65 years, is a unique time of life! It is a time where most adults in the United States are working, raising families, or maintaining social and community relationships. This chapter discusses adult physical and cognitive developmental experiences that present significant implications for counseling. Physical attractiveness is important to humans throughout the lifespan, but it is just as often determined individually than by sociocultural norms. Cognition contains many domains of how humans receive, process, and communicate information—all in one gray matter space. A major factor that impairs adult cognition is physical trauma, including exposure to toxins. Physical trauma and toxin exposure can cause neurocognitive disorders such as traumatic brain injury. Cognition has a significant impact on the development of vocation. Employment associations and socioeconomic status play an important role in emotional health.
