Historically, work on stereotyping has focused around several issues: the content of stereotypes of particular groups (e.g., Katz & Braly, 1933); the functions that stereotypes serve for those who hold them (e.g., projection of unacceptable impulses); and the role that stereotypes play in maintaining the disadvantaged position of the stereotyped group (see, for example, Ashmore & Del Boca, this volume). An equally important but less explored issue is how and when stereotypes are applied in social interaction. That is, although it is important to know what stereotypes a person holds, what that person does with those stereotypes is ultimately of greater importance for understanding how stereotypes function to organize and shape social reality.
