The paper examines two types of technological innovation which have modified the exercise of modem musical composition, showing how the objects of creative activity are conventions. Maintaining or transforming them has an influence on the individual and collective organisation of artistic work as well as on the conditions of the accumulation of shared aesthetic knowledge. Analysing the steps leading from the production to the evaluation of artistic work shows that the constitutive operations of the functioning of artistic worlds crystallize in the properties of the created objects. Time tests all the conventions through which the production of ever lasting Works becomes a collective action.
