Abstract Primary prevention of intimate partner violence (IPV) has traditionally focused on school-based interventions for middle and high schools students. Two programs have been found to prevent IPV: the Safe Dates program, and the Youth Relationship Project. Conceptual models for the primary prevention of IPV should be expanded to be more developmentally and ecologically focused. A developmental perspective seeks to understand the early precursors of IPV. Such a perspective would seek to understanding the trajectories of partner violence and related behaviors, and would understand risk and protective factors as being developmentally specific.
