In this paper, I examine issues related to teaching Caribbean performance across difference in Northern academic settings. Drawing on examples from the Canadian context, I examine discourses of imperial power and knowledge re-emerging in the contemporary North and then discuss the ways in which these produce tensions between performance production in the region, and its translation and reception into Northern white majority settler states. I argue that knowledge production in performance which disrupts the reproduction of imperial discourses, needs to take careful account of these tensions at the level of narratives and images produced, processes of production and critical reception.
