Spacetimemattering looks like an unnecessarily long word. “The ‘time of now’ is an infinitely thin slice of time called the present moment, but rather a thick-now that is a crystallization of the past diffracted through the present”. The concept of spacetimemattering is critical for educators to consider for pedagogies and, in doing so, for the justice and ethics of pedagogies. Historically, in the UK as the industrial revolution took hold, time was harnessed to factory technologies; workers’ time was organized into chunks of work and leisure. Time became work-money-bodies-material goods-global distribution chains. The ‘thickness’ of spacetimematterings cannot be consigned to a past that is done and gone. Time and space are sedimented within the girl’s bodies as virtual, energetic potentialities. Ivinson and Renold’s study indicates how matter – girl’s bodies, their environment and the deep geological folds of the Welsh Valleys – does time and space, and vice versa.
