Abstract

This chapter, a reprint of an article written after a 2006 workshop on Trading Zones, Interactional Expertise, and Interdisciplinary Collaboration, serves as an introduction to the core concepts of this book and uses them to create a taxonomy that shows how a trading zone between expertise communities can gradually morph into a new area of expertise. The discussions cover trading zones as the locus of incommensurability; interlanguage trading zones; a general model of trading zones; trading locations and the fractal approach; the evolution of trading zones; and funding trading zones.
