Introduction to Political Communication

Abstract

Politics is endemic to democracy. Political communication plays an indispensable role in the practice of politics. Although the terms “politics” and “political communication” elicit negative attitudes among many citizens, they can be positive forces. Both are important to understand if we are to appreciate the state of our democracy and the role media play in contemporary political life. This chapter defines politics and political communication, the focus of this book, emphasizing the influences of symbols, mediated messages, technology, and the complex, intricate dance among the three key players: leaders, media, and citizens.
