On reading this detailed history of the Royal Court’s international work, I am both heartened by possibility and overwhelmed by the transitory nature of what we do. That so many writers have been inspired by and found a voice with this work is testament to Elyse Dodgson’s drive and passion. To see so many accounts, so many life-changing moments, so many stories uncovered, all gathered in this one book is a mighty thing. That this study might not have happened and this record not existed fills me with a mild anxiety. For although every encounter, each workshop and all the plays written are lodged forever with the writers and participants and that, in one way, is reward enough, in another way to be able to learn from and admire the detail, the scale and the dedication to the international work over so many years feels galvanising and vital.
