This chapter describes Multiple Baseline (MB) and Multiple Probe (MP) designs and their use by applied researchers investigating the effectiveness of a wide range of interventions in educational and clinical settings. It discusses how baseline logic applies to this class of designs, and how threats to internal validity are evaluated. The chapter provides guidelines for their use, discussing advantages and limitations of variations of both designs. As with A-B-A-B designs, multiple baseline designs are used to compare baseline (A) and intervention (B) conditions. To demonstrate experimental control using MB and MP designs, researcher must make two predictions prior to initiating their research.
