Parallel dérive is presented as a new arts-based research method. The origins of dérive (drift) as a means of artistic expression in the 20th century and its development up to the present day is outlined. The potentialities of a specific type of dérive, parallel dérive, are highlighted making use of the elements it provides: parallelism, sequential rhythm, synchrony, empathy, connection, a playful component and a comparison of contexts. The specificity of parallel dérivewithin arts-based research and the difference of dérive as an artistic action are presented, positioning the proposal in a socio-critical paradigm and in relation to the principles of unpredictability, uncertainty and intertwining. The possibilities that this method offers to different disciplines and academic fields are showed. It is also proposed how portable technologies can contribute to the collection of graphics, photographic, sound, auditory or audiovisual data for the elaboration of graphic discourse, photo essays, auto-ethnographic stories, third-party narratives, sound maps, cartography, or locating objects through this method. As conclusions parallel dérive is validated as an essential means in the construction of a new way of understanding the world and human relations, with repercussions for the fields of the arts, humanities, social and natural sciences.
