Abstract In light of normative declines in some areas of cognition with age, this chapter considers the potential of behavioral pathways for mitigating and delaying these declines. In particular, it reviews evidence for causal effects of activity engagement and social integration on cognitive development in adulthood, noting some of the challenges in interpreting existing literature for guiding policy and practice. It also discusses some of the neurocognitive, socioemotional, and motivational mechanisms that may contribute to effects of engagement and social integration on cognitive health and concludes with an argument for the utility of an ecological approach to develop principles of lifespan cognitive health.
