Abstract The ultimate goal of health care is to improve, restore or preserve functioning and well-being related to health, that is, health-related quality of life (HRQoL). All health care endeavors, regardless of setting, are aimed directly or indirectly at achieving this goal. Whether immunizing against infectious diseases, screening for cancer, setting a broken bone, rehabilitating muscle strength after surgery, providing curative chemotherapy, or treating pain and dehydration in a palliative care setting, the intention is to restore an individual ‘s previous level of functioning or preserve wellbeing, if restoration to the former level is not possible.
