Abstract Faced with the demise of traditional careers, individuals are increasingly engaged in jobs comprised of short-term projects, rather than in permanent employment arrangements (Bridges, 1994; Huey, 1994; O’Reilly, 1994; Richman, 1994a, 19946). This radical shift in responsibility and action in work life is transforming our notion of careers and work organization. Understanding what these changes mean and how they are being played out is a critical issue for practitioners and organizational scholars.
