Abstract The human brain is the result of our evolutionary history, and this history has been driven by natural selection. This is not controversial. Nor is it controversial that human psychology, both in terms of mental experience and of overt behaviour, is under the control of the brain and consequently is itself the result of natural selection. What is less obvious and a matter of intense interest at present is the extent to which applying evolutionary thinking makes a difference to the understanding of human psychology here and now. A broad survey of different attitudes to these questions and my perspective in the matter can be found elsewhere (Betzig 1997; Kacelnik and Krebs 1997).
