Whenever working memory (WM) is a referral concern, a comprehensive evaluation of WM should be conducted, especially when the client is a student who is experiencing academic learning problems. A comprehensive assessment means that all five WM components from the integrated model of WM should be directly tested with standardized measures. This chapter lays out the rationale and detailed procedures for accomplishing comprehensive testing of WM in a psychometrically valid and acceptable manner. It helps the reader understand the criteria and methods used to identify measures of WM and determine which WM component is being assessed. The consideration of informal and qualitative assessment data is good practice in any type of psychological assessment. Such data can be used to corroborate test scores and support assessment hypotheses. The chapter provides suggestions and structure for the informal assessment of WM.
