This chapter presents a brief history of scatter research and a preliminary investigation of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fifth Edition (WISC-V) scatter at three levels: index, subtest, and item. Consistent with the scale's structure and age range, early investigations of index-level scatter on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) initially focused on Verbal IQ-Performance, IQ discrepancies in adults. Cumulative percentages are also reported for children obtaining 0-5 strengths, assets, weaknesses, and deficits for a preliminary investigation of how the application of more stringent criteria for assets and deficits may impact the identification of specific learning disorder relative to less stringent criteria requiring only an intra-individual weakness. Similar to historical precedents in investigations of index-level scatter, research on subtest-level scatter has been ongoing for decades with a pattern of inconsistent findings and even more controversy.
