Abstract Chapter 3 focusses on the specific proposals put forward by two early German experimentalists, Wilhelm Wundt and Georg Elias Müller. It explores Wundt’s and Müller’s detailed critical rejection of the so-called ‘systematic introspection’ practiced by Oswald Külpe’s Würzburg School (and which is most representative of contemporary understanding of Introspectionist Psychology), and Wundt’s and Müller’s own introspective methods. Their positive proposals show how conceptions of the different types of introspective access - in particular, of their epistemic potential and their susceptibility to interference - shape the methodological terrain. These two approaches serve as a good illustration how, on the basis of detailed conceptions of introspective access, we can formulate different types of introspective methods in a more systematic manner. In particular, discussion of their views helps to bring into focus the basic interaction between types of introspective access and introspective methods in an empirical setting.
