In this manuscript, we discuss concepts, issues and resolutions that call for conscious awareness in research into the unconscious. We discuss historical episodes and episodes of controversial experimentation that are formative rallying points for understanding contemporary attitudes to the unconscious in psychological science. We acknowledge the impact of historical controversy to contemporary polarisation. We show how the latter has resulted in conceptual debates, methodological inquiries and also contributing resolutions. We meta-analytically cite the instances that relate to bias in topical research. Conscious of our potential contribution to collegial dissension, we present in replicated illustrations how purportedly established and well-known, and, furthermore, previously unaddressed methodological, statistical and psychophysical biases occur in this area, and address how we should have and can resolve them. As a conclusive lesson of revisiting the aforementioned concepts, issues and resolutions, we discuss the understated importance of a holistic scholarly, and applied-empirical conscious understanding of the history, theory, methodology and experimental findings of research relating to the unconscious.
