Consumers tend to rely on expert reviews or previous consumers’ opinions to minimize uncertainty when purchasing wine. Previous research has explored the role of expert wine reviews in influencing price, production volume, and consumer demand, as well as the relationships between various wine-related variables such as rating, ranking, price, and sales volume. No study to date, however, has examined expert wine reviews over several decades to determine trends in variables such as wine color, grape variety, varietal/blended wines, production region, and price. This study utilizes data from 3,400 reviews of Wine Spectator’s annual Top 100 Wines over the period 1988–2021 to analyze trends in general wine attributes, production regions, ageability, price, varietal popularity, scores, and ranking. Results of this research extend the extant literature by generating new variables and adding a new, wider perspective in analyzing trends in high-quality wines. Important theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
