Kathleen de la Peña McCook’s (2000) book A Place at the Table: Participating in Community Building fits within a tradition of public library scholarship and policy focused on understanding stimulating public library participation in community processes. This article considers some aspects of that tradition, how it shaped McCook’s work, the contributions she made to it, and some recent trends. The article also considers what additional research is needed to help us fully understand how exactly public librarians participate in community building in particular communities with particular community partners at particular moments in time.
