This qualitative study explores the transformative impact of Linard H. McCloud, a high school band director who served for 45 years at Burke High School in Charleston, South Carolina. Grounded in resilience theory and using narrative inquiry, the study examines how McCloud’s mentorship promoted personal growth, self-esteem, and social-emotional development in his students. Interviews with four former students, each from a different decade, provide a longitudinal perspective. Findings highlight the role of McCloud’s high expectations, structured discipline, and affirming guidance in helping students overcome academic and personal challenges. His mantra, “one more time for clarity,” fostered perseverance and attention to detail. Band performances at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) also inspired many students to pursue higher education. While limited in sample size, this study emphasizes the power of long-term mentorship in music education and calls for broader recognition of educators who shape student success beyond the classroom.
