This paper presents a study of academic librarians’ roles in Australian universities. In specific, this qualitative research explores the social (re)construction of academic librarians’ roles. Academic librarians and library managers in three Australian universities participated by attending individual semi-structured interviews. The results revealed that academic librarians’ roles have changed across time, to ensure alignment with parent universities’ strategies. It was also found that regardless their contribution in the learning and research support space, librarians’ roles are often taken for granted and insufficiently acknowledged.
