The present longitudinal microgenetic study examines the stability of inhibitory performance in German kindergarten children within one measurement (intraindividually) and across different measurements (interindividually). A total of 70 4- to 6-year-old children were tested three times within four weeks using two computerized inhibition tasks. Response accuracy, reaction times and intraindividual standard deviations of reaction times were analyzed. Intraindividual standard deviations correlated moderately with the other measures. They were low to moderately stable across measures. Using regression analysis, intraindividual standard deviations at the third assessment could be predicted from the first assessment only for one task, and the amount of variance explained was small. By contrast, t3 reaction times accounted for a substantial proportion of the variance in t1 reaction times. Intraindividual standard deviations of reaction times are useful complementary measures of the efficiency of inhibitory control processes, in addition to accuracy and mean reaction time, but they appear to be strongly influenced by state aspects.
