The purpose of the article is to determine the importance of education for the development of religious tourism. Three dimensions of education are considered: knowledge, skills and attitudes, which are related to tourist service providers categorised as either having direct or indirect contact with religious tourists. An additional objective is to investigate whether there are differences regarding perceptions of the need for education on religious tourism in various sample European countries. The study was qualitative in nature, using a triangulation of methods combining expert interviews and focus group interviews conducted in 6 European countries (Poland, Spain, Greece, Italy, Romania, Bulgaria). The research showed that education should play an important role in creating a religious tourism product. It was noted, however, that the exact type of education may differ slightly for those directly involved in serving tourists and for those who do not interact directly with them. However, there were no significant differences in terms of the countries from which the respondents came.
