This chapter continues the discussion of revitalization by exploring the different strategies unions can employ in pursuit of this objective. After briefly reviewing institutional and strategic choice theories of trade unionism, the chapter then explores insights from social movement theory. It is argued that unions need to be analysed as social movements, as well as bargaining agents and strategic actors, if the prospects of revitalization are to be fully understood. The chapter then maps out the different kinds of power resource available to unions and on that basis define and discusses six strategies for revitalization: organizing new members, partnership with employers, restructuring through internal transformation and/or mergers, political action, coalitions with other social forces, and international action.
