The authors apply data envelopment analysis to the reverse flows of a municipal solid waste management system to see if this type of analysis could help optimize distribution systems for reverse logistics channels. Reverse distribution describes the flow of goods from a consumer back to a producer by means of a distribution channel, usually after its utility is fully or partly exhausted. Unlike the forward flow of goods, reverse flows collect goods from many sources and direct them toward one or more destinations. The research shows that it is possible to measure the efficiency of municipal waste collection operations with this method, and other reverse flows could be measured by it as well.
