Traffic congestion, smog and urban sprawl pose serious problems for cities. But they also present opportunities to build better cities. Research on how cities around the world tackle these problems led the authors of this guide to propose an integrated solution based upon traffic calming, light rail, and urban villages. This guide is intended for decision-makers, planners, activists, students, and anyone interested in the future of cities. The contents of the guide are presented in the following sections: The Crisis of Our Cities; How Car Use Defines a City; An Integrated Solution; Traffic Calming; Traffic Calming in Australia; Light Rail; Light Rail in Australia; Light Rail vs Freeways; Urban Villages; The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; The Search for the Good City; and Case Studies: Traffic Calming: The European Experience; Light Rail in Canada; Light Rail in Europe; Urban Villages in the USA; and Examples of Urban Villages (Munich; Stockholm; Vancouver; Portland; and San Francisco).
