Beginning with a discussion of the multiple roles of the tour guide, this article discusses why interpretation should be regarded as a critical and indispensible element of what ecotour guides do. Research findings are introduced which link quality guiding, and in particular the use of interpretation by guides, to the quality of the ecotourist experience. Current practices and issues in tour guide recruitment, professional development, best practice and recognition and reward schemes are discussed in conclusion.
