Profile analysis has been used by both researchers and psychologists to provide clinical and diagnostic information regarding unique patterns of learning strengths and weaknesses. Cluster analysis has been used to derive subtest patterns on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R; Wechsler, 1981) that have been advanced as evidence for the neurological basis of LD without attempts to verify that LD profiles differ from those found in the normal population. To assess whether college students with LD yield unique and interpretable profiles, the WAIS-R profiles of 194 college students diagnosed as LD were examined. Nearly 94% of the profiles of students with LD were found to match the profiles found in the WAIS-R standardization sample. Moreover, profile shapes were unable to explain a significant proportion of the variation in student academic skills. Implications for the practice of subtest analysis are discussed with respect to college students with LD.
