EnglishFrom the observation of the current industrial landscape. it is apparent that in a certain number of industrial districts, a core industry coexists with other production activities, whose presence in the district is also significant. Bearing this in mind, the aim of this article is to better understand the causes of the multi-specialised nature of these industrial districts, examining to what extent this condition is the result of the industrial district's evolution in response to changes in the competitive environment. Furthermore, it is also investigated how multi-specialisation could affect both the performance of the district's firms and competitiveness of the industrial district as a whole. With this purpose, the conclusions reached from theoretical considerations are complemented by the results obtained from a shift-share analysis calculated on a sample of industrial districts located in Castilla-La Mancha. These results suggest that multi-specialisation could be considered as a visible expression of the industrial district's evolution in order to adapt its structure to changing external competitive pressures.
