The purpose of this collaborative action research interview study was to examine servicelearning as a music teacher preparation practice within an elementary general music methods course. The research question was: What were the perceptions of participants involved in a service-learning, elementary general music field experience? Participants included (a) seven former elementary general music methods students who had taught music to young children during a service-learning field experience during the fall semester of 1998, 1999, or 2000, (b) the elementary school principal, (c) the classroom teacher liaison at the service-learning site, and (d) Reynolds, the teacher- researcher who designed the experience for participants. Three categories emerged: participants ' general perceptions of the service-learning field experience, issues of implementation, and the service-learning experience as a motivation for students to select elementary general music as an initial career choice. Researchers present considerations for music teacher education and future research.
