This chapter defines interpretation and gives a brief overview of the history, literature, and development of interpretation practice in museums and heritage. It then uses a generic exhibition process as a basis to discuss the function of the interpreter, their key relationships, skills, and practical issues in exhibition development. A case study, using examples from the author's experience as an interpretive writer working at Te Papa, explores a harmonious integration of curation, text, and design. The chapter concludes with an argument for the importance of interpretation as a distinct field within museum and heritage practice.
