Discussions of style in relation to translation have traditionally focused on the translation of style (as opposed to the style of translation). This perspective has tended to assume that literary style is restricted to the domain of the source text. More recent research has considered style from the point of view of the target text and has proposed the concept of translator style. This perspective offers a new understanding and valorization of the work of translators as creative literary artists and of translations as artistic products. This essay presents an overview of the different views on style in literary translation, addressing some key theoretical and methodological challenges, such as the debate as to whether style can be divorced from content, whether we can distinguish the style of the author from that of the translator, and how we can look for the motivation behind stylistic choices.
