Transformational leadership is one of the most common empirical predictors of leadership effectiveness in changing environments. However, the motives of transformational leaders have seldom been explored. This multivariate study explored the linkage between managerial explicit motives, influence tactics, leadership styles, and employee effectiveness. 81 managers and 359 staff from diverse industries were sampled to identify the key motives behind transformational leadership. Results show that the power motive and rational persuasion are strong predictors for transformational leadership.
