A survey of half the academic library members of the Asso ciation of Research Libraries examined the relationship between the type of middle manager employed and the ex istence of certain desirable conditions regarding the com position of his/her bibliographic instruction program. Both preparation and implementation practices were in vestigated, and comparisons of staff involvement, clien teles, reward or incentive systems, teaching modes, and types of instruction were made. Based on the results of the analysis, conclusions are drawn regarding the value of the instructional coordinator in large academic libraries, and recommendations are provided for optimal program de velopment.
