This chapter maps something of the territory of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) writing with a sketch on how it is studied, what is known about it, and illustrations on how this impacts on the practice of teaching and research. This work follows the move analysis work, which seeks to identify the recognisable stages of particular institutional genres and the constraints on regular move sequences. While there are a number of ways of studying texts, genre analysis has become established as the most widely used and productive methodology in ESP writing research. Together, this research demonstrates the distinctive differences in the genres of the academy where particular purposes and audiences lead writers to employ different rhetorical choices. ESP conceptions of literacy and writing instruction need to come to terms with the challenges posed by critical perspectives of literacy and teaching.
